Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, President of Centre for Change, has urged public office holders to serve Nigerians with greater commitment as the country records 26 years of uninterrupted democracy.

Okei-Odumakin made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

The human rights activist said that a greater commitment to democratic principles would lead to the realisation of the dreams of Nigeria’s heroes and heroines who fought for democracy.

She said that some unpatriotic Nigerians were still abusing democratic principles.

She says democracy is about the rule of law, human rights protection, and social and economic justice.

She said: “A difference from the above hallmarks of democracy is anti-democratic.”

Okei-Odumakin called on Nigeria’s leaders at all levels to prioritise the welfare and well-being of the people.

“To whom much is given, much is expected; therefore, leaders should be committed to upholding democratic principles and serving the people with integrity.

“They should prioritise the welfare and well-being of the people,” she said.

She also advised the masses to demand accountability from their leaders.

Okei-Odumakin said that Nigerians must continue to push for good governance, accountability and social and economic justice.
