No fewer than 75 persons were reportedly killed in road accidents between January and June in Edo State, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The Edo State Sector of the FRSC, Cyril Mathew, disclosed this to reporters yesterday in Benin City.

Mathew said the victims were killed in 101 road crashes that occurred in the state.

He said 903 passengers were involved in accidents, 304 sustained injuries, while 75 persons lost their lives within the period under review.

According to him, 15 passengers were killed in January, 18 in February, 14 in March, four in April, five in May, while 19 died in June.

He attributed most of the accidents to brake failure, overspeeding, dangerous driving, the use of phones, route violations, among others, by drivers.

The sector commander said the command has stepped up a campaign across the state to sensitise motorists on the need to imbibe a safety culture to ensure the safety of passengers and pedestrians.

He said the campaigns are part of efforts aimed at changing the narrative of road crashes in the state.

He, however, warned motorists against overloading, drunk driving, night driving, use of the phone and speeding for their safety and that of passengers.

Mathew called on stakeholders to work together with the corps to ensure zero road traffic crashes in the state.
