Awe (Nasarawa): Alhaji Isa Abubakar-Umar, the Emir of Awe in Nasarawa State, has advised Political Parties against the imposition of candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Emir made the call when Mr Adamu Ninga, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, visited his palace on Wednesday.

Ninga visited the emir in the company of members of the State Working Committee (SWC) of the party.

The traditional ruler called on political parties to respect the will of the people and ensure transparency in the selection of their candidates.

“The imposition of candidates can undermine the democratic process and potentially lead to political apathy.

“Imposition can lead to intra-party conflicts and disputes, loss of trust and voter apathy.

“The electorate may lose faith in the electoral process and even key institutions,” he said.

The emir highlighted the need for transparent and inclusive party primaries that would ensure candidates emerge through a democratic process.

“This approach can help build trust, promote credible leadership and ensure that elected officials genuinely represent the people’s will,” he added.

Speaking, the PDP Chairman said that the visit was to thank members for electing them to lead the party in the state for the next three years.

Ninga, who promised to run an all-inclusive system, said that all party members would have a level playing field to operate.

The Chairman also visited Dr Abdullahi Amegba-Agbo, the Osana of Keana and Dangiwa Orume, the Osuko of Obi, all in Obi Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

Ninga later met separately with stakeholders of the party from the two localities.
