Badagry (Lagos State): The Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Badagry, Lagos State, intercepted seven fibre boats loaded with foreign parboiled rice on the Badagry-Porto-Novo creek.
A reliable source hinted that, in Badagry on Sunday, the smugglers were intercepted by personnel of the FOB on Saturday.
Acting swiftly on Saturday, Navy personnel disrupted the smuggling operation, prompting several crew members to flee into the water. A few individuals were apprehended.
“However, they were hungry boat boys used by smugglers engaged in their nefarious activities,” he said.
Nevertheless, the FOB Badagry has not issued any statement on the interception at the time of filling in this report.
It is noteworthy that since the new Commanding Officer, Capt. Leye Omotayo assumed Command of FOB Badagry, and operations have been intensified on the waterways with a 24-hour patrol.
Meanwhile, there is a need for deeper collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and other law enforcement agencies, as well as with the host community, in their collective efforts at tackling smuggling activities in the border area.
