The Students Who Refused to Stay Silent

by Kehinde Adegoke

In the heart of Ondo North, a storm is brewing—not in the skies, but in the voices of its youth.

For months, student leaders across the region have maintained that they have watched with growing frustration as promises made by Senator Olajide Ipinsagba, representing Ondo North Senatorial District in the Red Chamber, have dissolved into silence.

Now, they’re speaking out—not with anger, but with conviction.

Led by a coalition of presidents from indigenous student unions, the youth of Ondo North have issued a bold and unified call for accountability.

Their message is clear: the senator who once vowed to uplift their future has failed to deliver, and the consequences are being felt in lecture halls, on campuses, and in the hearts of students struggling to stay afloat.

At the centre of their grievance lies a promise unkept, including bursaries and scholarships that never arrived.

For many students, these funds weren’t just financial support; they were lifelines. Without them, academic progress has stalled, and hope has dimmed. “We believed in him,” said one student leader. “But belief without action is betrayal.”

Beyond financial neglect, the student leaders say they’ve been systematically excluded from decisions that shape their communities.

Their energy, ideas, and innovation—once seen as assets—have been sidelined. Projects roll out without consultation. Initiatives launch without youth input. And the result? A disconnect between leadership and the very people it claims to serve.

This isn’t just a protest—it’s a plea and a call to accountability. The students are urging Senator Ipinsagba to rise to the occasion, to honour his commitments, and to restore the trust that once bound him to his constituents.

They’re not asking for favours—they’re demanding the dignity of inclusion, the fairness of opportunity, and the transparency of leadership.

Their statement ends with a powerful reminder: public office is not a privilege—it’s a responsibility. And if that responsibility is neglected, the people have every right to question its legitimacy.

“The people of Ondo North deserve better,” they write. “And it is time for Senator Ipinsagba to deliver.”

Signed by seven prominent student leaders, this declaration is more than a press release—it’s a movement. A movement that says the youth are watching, the youth are thinking, and most importantly, the youth are ready to act.

This is not just a call for accountability. It’s a demand for leadership that listens, delivers, and respects the power of its people.

A CALL FOR ACCOUNTABILITY: ONDO NORTH STUDENTS’ LEADERSHIP VOICES CONCERNS OVER SENATOR IPINSAGBA’S NEGLECT AND UNFULFILLED PROMISES

The student leadership representing the interests of Ondo North has come forward to express profound disappointment and disillusionment with the performance of Senator Ipinsagba. Despite numerous promises and assurances, our senator has woefully failed to deliver tangible benefits to our constituents. This lack of fulfilment has led to widespread discontent among the student leaders, which makes us feel that our trust has been betrayed.

Specifically, the senator’s failure to provide bursaries and scholarships as promised has left many deserving students in dire straits. This oversight has not only hindered academic progress but also perpetuated a sense of hopelessness among the youth. It is imperative that Senator Ipinsagba addresses this pressing issue to empower the next generation of leaders.

Moreover, the persistent sidelining of student leaders in decision-making processes has undermined our collective efforts to drive progress and development in our constituency. By excluding student leaders from key projects and proactive actions, Senator Ipinsagba has missed valuable opportunities to tap into the creativity, innovation, and energy of the youth. This approach has not only stifled growth but also created a sense of disillusionment among us all.

We urge Senator Ipinsagba to rise to the challenge of accountability and fulfil his obligations to the people who elected him. It is imperative that he stands by his words and delivers on his promises, rather than merely enjoying the privileges of office without any meaningful impact. By doing so, he can restore the trust and confidence of the people and demonstrate his commitment to serving the interests of Ondo North.

We demand accountability, transparency, and tangible results! We call on Senator Ipinsagba to demonstrate his commitment to serving the people of Ondo North by taking concrete actions that benefit our constituents. If not, we fear that his continued occupation of the office may become untenable.

The people of Ondo North deserve better, and it is time for Senator Ipinsagba to deliver.
