Abuja:  Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Abbas Tajudeen, has inaugurated an ad hoc committee to investigate widespread complaints over excessive bank charges and unexplained salary deductions affecting civil and public servants nationwide.

At the inauguration ceremony on Thursday, Tajudeen described the probe as a critical step toward restoring fairness and transparency in Nigeria’s financial system.

He said the House was duty-bound to protect citizens from exploitative practices that erode trust and diminish earnings.

“The deductions faced by public servants are deeply troubling.

“These are hardworking Nigerians who should not be penalised by unjust financial practices. The demands for transparency and fairness in banking cannot be ignored,” Tajudeen declared.

He assured that the committee would engage stakeholders across sectors to uncover irregularities and recommend reforms that safeguard citizens’ financial rights.

“Our goal is to shape a just financial landscape where every Nigerian’s voice is heard,” he added.

Committee Chairman, Rep. Kelechi Nwogu (PDP–Rivers), said the panel would examine the nature and legality of taxes, levies, and salary deductions, including cases of non-remittance.

He also pledged to scrutinise bank charges imposed on customer accounts, particularly the application of Value Added Tax (VAT).

“We will identify irregularities, advocate reforms, and ensure these deductions are justifiable.

“We’re prepared to make bold recommendations, regardless of whose interests are affected,” Nwogu insisted.

He called on financial experts and stakeholders to cooperate fully, emphasising that their input would be crucial in developing practical, citizen-focused solution.
