NAFDAC Moves to Quell Fears Over Nestlé Infant Formula Recall

by TheDiggerNews

Lagos: Amid global concerns over contaminated infant formula, Nigeria’s food and drug regulator has moved to reassure parents that Nestlé products approved for sale in the country remain safe.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) insists that none of the infant formulae registered in Nigeria are affected by the voluntary recall announced by Nestlé UK across more than 50 countries.

NAFDAC Director‑General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, confirmed that the SMA Gold 1, SMA Gold 2, and SMA Gold 3 brands sold in Nigeria are manufactured at Nestlé’s Tuas Factory in Singapore and carry valid NAFDAC registration numbers.

She stressed that these products were not part of the batches flagged abroad for possible contamination with cereulide — a heat‑resistant toxin produced by Bacillus cereus that can trigger nausea and vomiting.

While assuring Nigerians of the safety of locally approved formulae, Adeyeye admitted that risks remain from unauthorised imports, online purchases, or products carried into the country by travellers.

“The alert was issued purely as a precaution, in line with our duty to keep Nigerians informed of global food safety concerns,” she said.

NAFDAC has verified that both SMA and NAN infant formulae produced for Nigeria are excluded from the recall, but the agency warned parents to remain vigilant.

Adeyeye emphasised that the regulator maintains strict oversight through product registration, routine surveillance, and post‑market monitoring of infant nutrition products.

She urged the public to discard any recalled products found in circulation and report suspected sales or distribution to the nearest NAFDAC office. “Nigerians should rely only on verified information from NAFDAC and relevant authorities,” she advised, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to protecting infants and other vulnerable groups.
