UCL: Caicedo’s Late Strike Rescues Chelsea Against Brave Pafos

by Kehinde Adegoke

Stamford Bridge in London: Moises Caicedo spared Chelsea’s blushes with a decisive 78th‑minute header, sealing a nervy 1‑0 win over Cypriot underdogs Pafos at Stamford Bridge and keeping the Blues on course for Champions League last‑16 qualification.

In Liam Rosenior’s first Champions League outing as Chelsea boss, the hosts laboured against a spirited Pafos side and an inspired Jay Gorter in goal, who produced a string of superb saves to frustrate the Premier League giants.

Chelsea thought they had broken through early when Enzo Fernández headed home in the 18th minute, only for the effort to be ruled out for a foul. Pafos nearly punished the Blues’ wastefulness when Jaja’s deflected strike rattled the post, while Anderson Silva almost capitalised on a defensive lapse.

Rosenior’s halftime changes injected urgency, with teenager Estevão Willian forcing Gorter into another acrobatic stop. Still, the keeper denied Pedro Neto and Caicedo before finally being beaten when Pafos failed to clear a corner and Caicedo pounced with a close‑range header.

The victory leaves Chelsea needing a result at Napoli on January 28 to secure automatic passage to the last 16. Failure to do so could condemn Rosenior’s men to the stress of a play‑off round.

Rosenior has overseen three wins in his first four matches since replacing Enzo Maresca, but while Chelsea remain steady, sterner tests await. Fans may draw hope from history — both of the club’s Champions League triumphs in 2012 and 2021 came after mid‑season managerial changes — yet Rosenior’s path to emulating Roberto Di Matteo and Thomas Tuchel is only just beginning.

Pafos, featuring former Chelsea defender David Luiz on the bench, left Stamford Bridge with pride intact after pushing the Blues to the brink in their first‑ever clash with English opposition.
