Yobe Sees Fewer Crashes in 2025, But Fatalities Rise — FRSC

by Kehinde Adegoke

Damaturu: The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Yobe Command, says road traffic crashes dropped by 26 per cent in 2025, falling from 158 cases in 2024 to 117. However, the command noted a troubling rise in fatalities and injuries, underscoring the need for stronger enforcement and public compliance with safety rules.

The state Sector Commander, Mr Andrew Longkam, disclosed this in an interview with reporters on Wednesday in Damaturu.

“You may recall our earlier address at the launch of the 2025 Ember Months Sensitisation Campaign across the state,” Longkam said.

He stated that the campaign included a press conference, motorcade, and town hall meetings to advance road safety.

However, he noted fatalities rose from 78 in 2024 to 115 in 2025, while injuries increased from 867 to 926.

The sector commander said the number of persons involved in crashes increased from 1,549 in 2024 to 1,664 in 2025.

He added that the number of persons rescued without injury rose from 604 in 2024 to 623 in 2025.

Longkam emphasised that the rise in fatalities does not reflect poor performance and stressed that the command intensified enforcement and public enlightenment during the period.

He reported that 13,538 traffic offenders were apprehended and penalised in 2025.

The sector commander said speeding was responsible for about 80 per cent of crashes, adding that tyre violations, dangerous driving, overloading and route violations were the major causes of avoidable crashes.

He reaffirmed the command’s readiness to renew strategies aligned with the Corps’ Corporate Strategic Goal 2026 to reduce road traffic crashes nationwide by 10 per cent through data-driven interventions.

Longkam said his command was committed to intensifying enforcement, increasing public education, and collaborating with emergency services, among other measures.

He urged stakeholders and the public to comply with traffic rules, emphasising that road safety requires collective action.
