ICPC Intensifies Probe: El-Rufai’s Residence Searched Amid Dual Anti-Corruption Investigations

by Kehinde Adegoke

Abuja: Nigeria’s anti-graft spotlight sharpened on Thursday as operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) searched the residence of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, deepening scrutiny of his administration’s financial dealings.

The move comes just hours after his transfer from EFCC custody, underscoring the mounting pressure from parallel investigations into alleged misconduct.

The search was confirmed by El-Rufai’s Media Adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, who disclosed the development in a post on X. “UPDATE: ICPC searched Malam Nasir @elrufai’s residence today,” he wrote, signalling that the Commission’s action was part of a broader inquiry into financial irregularities allegedly linked to the former governor’s tenure.

El-Rufai’s legal team swiftly condemned the operation, describing it as unlawful and a violation of due process and fundamental rights. Their pushback adds a layer of legal and political tension to what is already one of the most closely watched corruption probes in recent years.

The timeline of events paints a picture of escalating scrutiny. On Monday, El-Rufai was detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after honouring an invitation. He was later released on administrative bail on Wednesday night, only to be taken into ICPC custody shortly afterwards. By Thursday, ICPC operatives had moved to search his residence, intensifying the investigation.

ICPC spokesperson John Odey confirmed that the former governor is being questioned by investigators, though he declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing nature of the inquiry. The Commission’s silence invites speculation about the scope of the allegations and the potential implications for El-Rufai’s political future.

The unfolding drama highlights Nigeria’s renewed emphasis on accountability and governance, with anti-corruption agencies working in tandem to probe high-profile figures. For El-Rufai, once seen as a reform-minded leader, the investigations mark a dramatic turn that could reshape perceptions of his legacy.
