A New Era of Leadership
After Kayode Egbetokun resigned unexpectedly, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu named Assistant Inspector-General Olatunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General.
Disu takes on the role of Nigeria’s police as they deal with insecurity, corruption allegations, and falling public trust.
Many see Disu’s appointment as a sign of reform and a move toward intelligence-based policing.
With more than 30 years of service, he is known for his strong investigative skills, leadership, and international experience. These qualities will now be tested by Nigeria’s serious security problems.
Reforms on the Horizon
The new Acting IG has a tough job ahead:
Disu is expected to focus on intelligence-led operations, updating strategies to predict and prevent crime rather than just responding after it occurs.
Restoring public trust is key. Disu needs to tackle corruption, extortion, and misconduct, which have weakened confidence in the police for years.
With his background in investigations, Disu will likely work to improve crime prevention and speed up police response, aiming for real results.
Training abroad enables him to promote collaboration with global partners and align Nigeria’s policing standards with worldwide best practices.
Insight into His Appointment
Disu’s rise contrasts markedly with the controversies that surrounded Egbetokun’s time in office, especially the unpopular extension of his service and ongoing security problems.
Many see Disu’s appointment as a step toward reform, professionalism, and intelligence.
Nigeria keeps struggling with banditry, kidnappings, and insurgency, while public scepticism toward the police remains high.
Disu must not only confront these crises but also restore credibility to an institution many Nigerians view with suspicion.
Profile: Birth, Education, and Training
Olatunji Disu was born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos and joined the Nigeria Police in May 1992.
He has more than 34 years of experience in operations, investigations, intelligence, and leadership.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University.
- He earned a Master’s in Public Administration.
- He also holds a Master’s in Criminology, Security, and Legal Psychology.
Disu has participated in many training courses, both in Nigeria and overseas, including in small arms control and counter-terrorism. These experiences have given him a global view of policing.
The Road Ahead
Disu’s appointment brings both opportunity and risk. If he can deliver reforms and rebuild trust, he could change the Inspector General’s role.
But if he fails to tackle insecurity and corruption, people may quickly lose confidence in him. Nigerians are now watching as Disu takes on the challenge of leading the police through one of their hardest times.
