European Allies Bolster Cyprus Defenses After Iranian Drone Attacks

by Toye Faleye

European countries are quickly boosting Cyprus’s defenses after Iranian-made drones attacked a British military base on the island, officials said Tuesday.

France is sending a warship to Cyprus and providing more land-based anti-drone and anti-missile systems to strengthen the island’s security.

German sources, who asked not to be named, said Berlin will also send a warship, with equipment arriving soon.

Greece has already sent four F-16 fighter jets to Cyprus, and two of its frigates are on their way.

President Nikos Christodoulides stated that he has been in direct contact with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni.

He emphasized that Greece’s quick response set the mood for wider European action.

“This demonstrates that Greece is leading by example in showing how the European Union should respond to such threats,” Christodoulides said.

These joint deployments show growing European worries about security in the eastern Mediterranean, as countries come together to help Cyprus face more drone threats.
