Speaking at the APC convention, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu rejected the idea of a one‑party state, stressing that Nigeria’s democracy must thrive on competition, accountability, and vibrant opposition
Abuja: President Bola Tinubu on Saturday declared that Nigeria must never become a one-party state, stressing that true democracy thrives only on vibrant competition and credible opposition — even as he rallied the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) around unity, discipline, and national transformation at the party’s Eighth National Convention held at Eagle Square, Abuja.
“Let me reiterate, we do not seek a one-party state. Democracy depends on vibrant, healthy competition.
As a statesman, I believe in opposition that challenges, questions, and refines policies.
He said such engagement improves governance, strengthens statecraft, and advances national development.
Tinubu described the convention as a defining moment in the party’s history, renewing commitment to its founding ideals.
This convention is a defining chapter in our democracy and the party’s story.
He explained the APC was founded for national transformation, not just political ambition.
“Let us remember this party is not just a vehicle for ambitious politicians.
“It was founded as a vehicle for national transformation, a home for anybody who wants to build a Nigeria where governance works, institutions function, and opportunities abound for all citizens.”
The president asserted that party unity is essential to progress and cautioned against division and personal ambition.
Our greatest strength is our unity. Guard ideology over ego.
Tinubu urged members to stay disciplined and focused, stressing that internal cohesion is vital for sustained political success.
He urged delegates, aspirants, and stakeholders to act with integrity and respect during the convention.
Tinubu paid tribute to the party’s founders and late leaders, including former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“Let us honour those who built this platform with courage and conviction, and ensure their vision is not diminished,” he said.
On governance, Tinubu emphasised that his administration is prioritising reform and resilience amid global and domestic challenges.
He noted progress in infrastructure, tax reforms, social investments, and national security.
“The sacrifices we are making today are laying the foundation for a more prosperous Nigeria tomorrow.”
Tinubu said Nigeria had recorded measurable improvements in several economic indicators, detailing a decline in year-on-year inflation rates, a noticeable increase in both domestic and foreign investor confidence, and reported consistent growth in key sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing.
He added that oil and gas reforms attracted foreign investment and improved the fiscal outlook.
The president acknowledged ongoing challenges, including constraints on electricity supply and legacy debts in the power sector.
He said creating the Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO) will improve transmission and boost nationwide electricity supply.
Tinubu addressed youths and women, urging greater participation in politics and governance.
To the youth, you are the hope of this nation. We must increase your opportunities for participation.
To women, your essential role strengthens our party.
He praised the Convention Planning Committee and party leaders for organising a successful event.
Tinubu urged new party officials to lead with integrity, fairness, and commitment to party values.
“The future of our party and Nigeria’s democracy depends on your leadership. Lead with courage, integrity, and vision,” he said.
