Gen. Musa Commands Frontline Troops: Shoot‑on‑Sight, Deploy New Anti‑Terror Strategies

Maiduguri: Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd.), on Tuesday issued an uncompromising order to frontline forces: neutralise any terrorist encountered—shoot on sight, no further clearance required. Musa also unveiled a series of new strategies to intensify military operations and hasten the fight against insurgents in the North-East.

Musa, addressing the troops alongside the state Minister of Defence, Bello Matawalle, in Maiduguri, stated the Nigerian military has already enacted new tactics to end the insurgency across the North-east.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the visit followed a series of attacks by Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in several communities in the region, especially Borno.

“You are making immense sacrifices—many have died, and many have been wounded. While we cannot fully repay you, rest assured, your dedication is acknowledged.

“The President and all Nigerians recognise your resilience. Stay disciplined, resolute, and determined to end terrorism and banditry.

“Our adversaries seek to undermine us; we must remain resolute,” the minister stated.

He also announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved the procurement of new aircraft and drones, among others, to enable the troops to perform their tasks without difficulty.

“I urge you not to get tired. Don’t let anyone convince you to do anything illegal—whether it’s drugs, ammunition, or weapons. Our only job here is to find Boko Haram and eliminate them. Is that clear?

“You don’t need to wait for orders. Wherever you are deployed, finding and taking down the enemy is your duty. I do not want to hear anyone say they were waiting for an order.

“Victory is fleeting; our goal is enduring success. Nigeria surpasses any obstacle, and negativity will not weaken us,” Musa said.

The minister said that with focus, new equipment, and international cooperation, the Nigerian Military is determined to secure the country and uphold its sovereignty.

He expressed satisfaction that the Armed Forces are performing exceptionally, stating their sacrifices are significant.

“We have more victories than defeats, and Nigerians should be proud of the resilience and dedication of our armed forces in safeguarding our nation,” Musa said.

The minister said the recent salary increases for military personnel will be implemented by the federal government within three months, with three months’ salary arrears to be paid immediately after.

He urged Nigerians to keep supporting the military and not focus on setbacks, adding that troops’ sacrifices merit recognition and backing.

“The story of their bravery must be told accurately, and we must stand united in strength and encouragement,” he added.

Earlier, the ministers also visited the Deputy Governor of Borno, Dr Usman Kadafur, and reassured the state authorities of the federal government’s commitment toward restoring peace in the state.

While responding, Kadafur said that the visit of the two ministers was a clear demonstration of the federal government’s readiness to overhaul security strategies in the fight against insurgency in the North-east.

Meanwhile, Musa also inaugurated housing units for military officers at Maimalari Barracks before departing for Abuja.
