Abeokuta: For many residents of Ogun State, the past week has been a reminder that law enforcement is not just about rules, but about protecting lives and livelihoods.
The Police Command announced the arrest of 89 motorists for number plate violations, part of a wider effort to ensure vehicles are traceable and criminals cannot hide behind anonymity.
“When vehicles move without proper identification, it becomes harder to track crime,” explained DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the Police Public Relations Officer.
Beyond traffic enforcement, the police also stepped in to protect families in Ogere Remo. On Friday night, armed robbers stormed Akuro Phase I, dispossessing residents of motorcycles, phones, and cash.
Panic spread quickly, but relief followed when operatives of the Ogere Division, supported by the Ogun State So-Safe Corps, vigilantes, and community members, intercepted the gang.
In the chaos, the robbers abandoned two stolen motorcycles and fled into the bush. One suspect was caught and is now assisting investigators.
Among the items recovered were a knife, an expended cartridge, and a broken padlock — stark reminders of the violence residents narrowly escaped.
For the victims, the recovery of their motorcycles meant more than property; it restored their means of livelihood.
Many depend on motorcycles for daily income, and losing them could have meant financial ruin.
Commissioner of Police, Mr Bode Ojajuni, praised the collaboration between police and community members, stressing that intelligence-led policing, visibility patrols, and stop-and-search operations will continue.
He urged motorists to comply with registration laws and advised residents to use only recognised motor parks and properly identified vehicles for their safety.
Ojajuni also appealed for public cooperation: “Timely and credible information from residents is what makes these successes possible. Together, we can keep our communities safe.”
For the people of Ogun, the week’s events underscored a simple truth — security is strongest when police and communities stand side by side.
