Haaland’s Brace Sends Norway Past Brazil in Historic World Cup Upset

by Tunmise Adegoke

Norway stunned the football world on Sunday, defeating five-time champions Brazil 2-1 to reach the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history.

Erling Haaland, their talismanic captain, delivered the decisive blows with two late goals that sealed a famous victory in Lagos on July 5, 2026.

Brazil began the match with authority, dictating possession and earning a penalty before halftime after a foul inside Norway’s box.

It looked like the perfect chance to take control, but Bruno Guimarães squandered it, firing wide and leaving the contest goalless at the break. That miss would prove costly.

Norway grew into the game after the interval. Martin Ødegaard orchestrated play from midfield, while Antonio Nusa’s pace and trickery stretched Brazil’s defence.

The breakthrough came in the 79th minute when Nusa’s precise cross found Haaland, who rose above his marker to power a header past Alisson.

Brazil pressed desperately for an equaliser, but Norway’s defence held firm. On the counter, Haaland’s strength and speed proved decisive once again.

In the 89th minute, he capitalised on defensive hesitation, calmly slotting home his second goal to put the result beyond doubt.

Neymar converted a penalty deep into stoppage time to reduce the deficit, but it was too late to change the outcome.

The victory propelled Norway into the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the England versus Mexico clash.

Haaland’s brace also strengthened his position in the Golden Boot race, underlining his status as one of the tournament’s most lethal forwards.

For Brazil, coached by Carlo Ancelotti, the defeat marked a bitter end to their quest for a record-extending sixth World Cup title.

The missed penalty and defensive lapses will linger as turning points in a match that slipped away from them, while Norway celebrated a night that will be remembered as the moment they truly arrived on football’s biggest stage.
