Abuja: Former President Goodluck Jonathan has spoken out against a swirling rumour that claimed he was offered a staggering ₦500 billion to run against National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Peter Obi, supposedly to divide South-South votes.
Jonathan, through his media adviser Dr Ikechukwu Eze, dismissed the story as nothing more than a fabrication.
“It’s false, baseless, and should be ignored,” Eze said, urging Nigerians not to be misled by what he described as a desperate attempt to drag the former president into political controversy.
The report, published by a little-known website, alleged that Jonathan himself admitted to receiving such an offer.
But Eze pointed out that the story didn’t even bother to mention where or when Jonathan supposedly made the claim, or who was behind the alleged offer.
“It has all the hallmarks of fake news,” Eze explained. “It was deliberately crafted to misinform the public.”
Jonathan’s camp reminded Nigerians that election seasons often bring a flood of misinformation, rumours, and false attributions.
They encouraged the public to pause before sharing sensational headlines and to verify claims from credible sources.
For Jonathan, the message was simple: don’t let fake news distract from the real issues.
