Widespread Chemical Exposure in Pregnancy
A landmark study published in JAMA Network Open has revealed that pregnant women are exposed to dozens of everyday chemicals, many of which may affect babies before birth.
Researchers from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, Stanford University School of Medicine, and the Woods Institute for the Environment analysed data from more than 5,000 mother‑child pairs between 2000 and 2021.
On average, participants carried 45 different chemicals in their bodies, with some samples containing as many as 64.
These included phthalates, replacement plasticisers, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and halogenated phenols — substances found in food packaging, drinking water, air pollution, personal care products, fragrances, and household items.
Phthalates and Replacement Chemicals
Phthalates and their replacements were among the most concerning. Despite restrictions on certain phthalates in children’s toys, the study found that replacement compounds may pose similar risks.
These chemicals were consistently associated with shorter pregnancies and lower birth weights.
“These chemicals are difficult to avoid because they’re in so many products we use every day,” explained Jessie Buckley, PhD, professor of epidemiology at UNC. “Reducing harmful chemicals at the source is the most effective way to protect children and families.”
Implications for the Fetus
Researchers emphasised that chemical exposure during pregnancy does not stop with the mother — many of these substances cross the placenta and reach the developing fetus.
This can shorten gestation, increasing the risk of preterm birth and lower birth weight, which affects survival and growth.
Endocrine‑disrupting chemicals interfere with hormonal signalling, disrupting organ development in the brain, immune system, and reproductive system.
Some exposures may even alter gene regulation, leaving children more vulnerable to chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular problems later in life.
Even small changes in birthweight or gestational age, the researchers noted, can have lifelong consequences for a child’s health and development.
Call for Stronger Safety Policies
Senior researcher Tracey Woodruff, PhD, stressed the need for stronger chemical safety policies.
“We found that several newer chemicals used to replace toxic ones are also harmful. This underscores why replacements must be properly evaluated before they reach the market,” she said.
Buckley added that individuals have limited control over exposure, as many sources are embedded in everyday products.
“Governments and companies need to do a better job of reducing harmful chemicals in everyday products and ensuring new chemicals are safe,” she said.
Protecting Mothers and Children
The findings highlight the importance of reducing chemical exposures during pregnancy. Researchers argue that government agencies and companies must take greater responsibility in limiting harmful substances, ensuring healthier pregnancies and stronger outcomes for children and families.
As Woodruff concluded: “Pregnant people are at risk of chemical exposure through multiple sources, many of them beyond their control. Stronger protections will lead to healthier children and families.”
