Lagos: Switzerland held their nerve to defeat Colombia 4–3 on penalties after a tense goalless draw that stretched through 120 minutes in Vancouver, booking their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.
The match was a battle of discipline and resilience. Colombia began brightly, dominating possession and pressing high to unsettle the Swiss.
Their wingers repeatedly tested the flanks, while their midfield worked tirelessly to disrupt Switzerland’s rhythm. Yet despite their energy, Colombia could not find a way past Switzerland’s compact defence.
Switzerland grew into the game after the first-half hydration break, slowing the tempo and building patiently from the back.
Substitutions added fresh legs, with Djibril Sow’s introduction strengthening their midfield and helping them regain control.
Both sides traded tactical changes in the second half, but neither could break the deadlock.
Extra time followed the same pattern: Switzerland enjoyed more of the ball, while Colombia remained dangerous on the counter. Fatigue set in, cramps appeared, and yellow cards were shown, but the scoreline stayed level.

Davinson Sánchez missed Colombia’s second, giving Switzerland the edge through Zeki Amdouni. Johan Campaz converted, but Manuel Akanji failed to extend the Swiss lead.
Carlos Hernández then missed for Colombia, while Cedric Itten calmly scored for Switzerland. Luis Díaz kept Colombian hopes alive, but Ruben Vargas stepped up to bury the decisive kick, sealing Switzerland’s 4–3 victory.
Switzerland’s patience, defensive organisation, and composure under pressure carried them through. Colombia impressed with their pressing and counter-attacks, but paid the price for missed opportunities.
