On Monday, the Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Musa, inaugurated 62 armoured vehicles and 300 motorcycles valued at N2.7 billion, which were donated to security agencies by the Sokoto State Government.
During his address at the inauguration in Sokoto, Musa praised Governor Ahmad Aliyu for his dedication to combating banditry and other security issues in the state.
He characterised the vehicles and equipment as essential tools in the ongoing battle against security threats in the region, emphasising that this initiative would undoubtedly complement the federal government’s efforts.
Musa also expressed gratitude to the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, for his role in facilitating the acquisition of the armoured vehicles.
However, he pointed out that merely procuring armoured vehicles does not ensure security in the state, as it necessitates a collective commitment and active participation from all stakeholders.
The minister urged the security agencies receiving the vehicles to maintain them diligently, as the government had invested billions of Naira in their procurement.
He warned security personnel against waiting for orders before taking action against any terrorists threatening the state.
“When you are deployed to shoot on sight any bandit that poses a danger to society, do not wait for orders from anyone; this is a general directive.
We must eliminate these bandits,” he stated. Earlier, Governor Aliyu mentioned that the vehicles and other security equipment were procured at a cost of N2.7 billion to enhance the safety of citizens and their property in the state.
Aliyu emphasised that security is the foundation upon which meaningful development can be built.
He acknowledged that insecurity has been a significant challenge for the nation, particularly in the northern region, with Sokoto being one of the most affected areas.
He disclosed that his administration had previously provided security agencies with similar resources worth N36 million.
The governor stated that since taking office, his administration has made the security of lives and property in the state a top priority.
He noted that his administration has acquired and provided over 200 vehicles and 280 motorcycles to security agencies since he assumed office.
“I have also increased the allowances for security personnel in critical areas of the state and constructed a mobile barracks in the Sabon Birni Area.
“Additionally, we established the Sokoto Security Guards and equipped them with 40 vehicles and 700 motorcycles. “We have also built and donated 25 houses in the Konnawa Area for security agencies throughout the state.”
He expressed gratitude to the leaders of security agencies for their support of the state government’s efforts to ensure safety, emphasising that security is a collective responsibility.
The governor disclosed that he has submitted a bill to the state House of Assembly to classify informants of bandits as bandits themselves, stating that he would sign the bill into law once it is approved by the legislators.
Furthermore, he mentioned that his administration has donated 10 Hilux vehicles to the Ministry of Works to aid in the ongoing construction of the Sokoto-Badagry highway.
