The Federal Government says it is working with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to provide digital identity for more than 80 million learners across Nigeria, a move aimed at transforming education planning and service delivery.
Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, made the announcement in Abuja on Thursday while receiving NIMC’s Director‑General, Bisoye Coker‑Odusote, during a stakeholder engagement on the NIMC Act 2026.
He described a credible national identity system as vital for effective governance, quality education, and sustainable growth.
Alausa explained that the ministry has already begun integrating the National Learners’ Identification Number (LIN) with the National Identification Number (NIN) through the Nigeria Education Management Information System (NEMIS).
He said this would ensure that education data is biometrically verified, supporting better policymaking, resource allocation, and improved learning outcomes.
“With about 80 million learners across all levels, education remains a strategic platform for strengthening Nigeria’s digital identity ecosystem,” Alausa said, adding that reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration are designed to promote transparency and national development through technology.
Coker‑Odusote noted that more than 120 million Nigerians have already been enrolled in the national identity database. She highlighted new initiatives such as a digital identity app and free digital ID cards, stressing that the NIMC Act 2026 provides the legal framework for secure digital governance and trusted electronic transactions.
Dr Alva Ikoku, Head of Strategy and Programme Office at NIMC, said the Act would enhance digital service delivery in education, including student enrolment, scholarship administration, examination management, and certificate authentication.
He added that the framework would help reduce fraud, improve data integrity, and support Nigeria’s digital economy agenda.
