NiMet Warns of 3-Day Rain, Thunderstorms Nationwide

Abuja: The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted cloudiness and rainfall across the country from Thursday to Saturday.

In its weather outlook released on Wednesday in Abuja, NiMet said patches of clouds were expected over the northern region on Thursday.

It forecast morning thunderstorms with light rains over parts of Gombe, Bauchi, Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba states.

The agency also predicted isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains later in the day over parts of Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto, Yobe, Adamawa, Borno and Taraba states.

For the North Central region, NiMet said thunderstorms with light rains were expected in the morning, while moderate rains were likely later in the day over parts of Niger, Kwara, Benue, Kogi, Plateau, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory.

In the southern region, it is forecast to be cloudy with morning rains over parts of Lagos, Ondo, Ogun and Ekiti states, followed by moderate rainfall in most parts of the region later in the day.

On Friday, NiMet said patches of clouds were expected over the northern region, with morning thunderstorms and light rains over parts of Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Taraba and Adamawa states.

It predicted thunderstorms with moderate rains later in the day over parts of Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba states.

The agency said sunny skies with patches of clouds were expected over the North Central region, with early morning thunderstorms and light rains over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Niger, Kwara and Kogi states.

Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected across the entire region.

For the southern region, NiMet predicted early morning light rains, with moderate rainfall later in the day over parts of Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, Oyo, Cross River, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Edo states.

On Saturday, it forecast partly cloudy skies over the northern region, with thunderstorms and light rains over parts of Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Borno, Taraba and Kaduna states in the morning.

It predicted thunderstorms with moderate rains later in the day over parts of Taraba, Kaduna and Adamawa states.

For the North Central region, NiMet said sunny skies with patches of clouds were expected, with thunderstorms and light rains over parts of Benue State in the morning.

Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Kwara and Kogi states.

In the southern region, cloudy conditions are expected, with light rains over parts of Lagos, Ogun, Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states in the morning, followed by moderate rains over most parts of the region later in the day.

NiMet said strong winds may precede rainfall in areas likely to experience thunderstorms. It urged the public to take adequate precautions, fasten loose objects to prevent damage, avoid driving in heavy rain and disconnect electrical appliances from sockets.

The agency also advised residents to stay away from tall trees to avoid falling branches and broken trunks.

Airline operators were urged to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective flight planning.

Residents were advised to stay updated through weather forecasts from the agency’s official channels.
