More than five weeks after a rainstorm tore through Warji Local Government Area in Bauchi State, displacing 4,332 households across seven communities and killing a 21-year-old resident, the House of Representatives’ response — a motion urging relief — is only now on record.
The motion, sponsored by Hon. Adamu Hashimu Ranga and considered on the July 9 Order Paper, states the disaster struck on June 4, 2026. It urges the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to provide relief materials and conduct a damage assessment. It sets no timeline and carries no enforcement mechanism.
As of this report, neither NEMA nor NEDC has issued any public confirmation of relief distribution or a completed damage assessment for Warji. A review of recent NEMA activity shows the agency has distributed relief materials in Taraba, Benue, and Lagos in the same window — but no similar intervention has been reported for Bauchi’s Warji communities.
The gap raises the real accountability question: not whether the House eventually noted the disaster, but why more than five weeks passed before it did, and why — weeks after the motion itself — there is still no public sign that displaced households have received help. For 4,332 families, the legislative record now shows concern. What it does not yet show is action.
