Maiduguri (Nigeria): The Nigerian military forces have carried out significant attacks against insurgents in the Northeast, killing at least 11 fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in two coordinated operations, the Defence Headquarters has confirmed.
The bombardment occurred along the Baga-Cross Kauwa road in Borno State and in Umbo, situated in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State, on September 15.
The Joint Task Force in charge of counter-terrorism in the region said the onslaught was part of its resolve to hunt down the network of insurgents and bring peace to the crisis-ridden communities.
The ISWAP fighters had ambushed and detonated an improvised explosive, shelling the Nigerian soldiers. However, the troops contained the attack, killing eight militants and their identified field commanders.
The military, in addition, also seized 14 motorcycles, several assault rifles, a round of ammunition, and other logistical supplies.
In another operation in Adamawa State, troops in collaboration with local vigilance groups and hunters recorded success, killing three additional militants, seizing weapons and communication equipment during the raid.
Meanwhile, Nigerian forces did not record any casualties in either operation.
The military reiterated its commitment to degrading the operational capacity of insurgent groups such as ISWAP and Boko Haram, whose activities have destabilised the Lake Chad region for over a decade.
Tens of thousands have lost their lives to the conflict that has displaced millions across Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
