The Gulf conflict has entered a dangerous new phase. An Iranian missile and drone strike on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia has left at least 10 US service members injured — two of them in serious condition — underscoring the vulnerability of American forces stationed across the region. The attack marks one of the most direct escalations since hostilities began in February.
The strike targeted Prince Sultan Air Base, a Saudi installation hosting US forces, sending shockwaves through Riyadh and Washington alike. At least two US Air Force refuelling aircraft were also damaged in the attack. Analysts warn that Tehran’s decision to hit a base housing US troops is a deliberate signal — testing the limits of American restraint and probing how far Washington is willing to go to defend its allies.
The timing is striking. The attack came a day after President Trump declared that Iran had been “obliterated” and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth made sweeping claims about American military dominance. The strike on Prince Sultan Air Base is Tehran’s answer.
For Saudi Arabia, the incident is a sobering reminder that even fortified installations remain exposed. For the US, it raises urgent questions about deterrence: can America continue to hold back from direct confrontation while its personnel are under fire? The latest casualties add to more than 300 US military service members wounded since the war against Iran started on February 28. Thirteen US troops have been killed in the conflict.
Observers note that Iran’s strategy appears calculated — stretching US commitments, raising the cost of protection, and forcing Washington into a dilemma between escalation and containment. In a revealing dual-track signal, Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva simultaneously said Tehran has agreed to facilitate and expedite humanitarian aid through the Strait of Hormuz — even as it strikes American bases and endures bombardment of its nuclear facilities. The attack also risks widening the conflict, drawing in more regional players and threatening global energy stability.
Analysts warn that at least 10 injured service members may be the beginning of a more perilous chapter. The strike is not just another battlefield incident — it is a geopolitical flashpoint that could redefine the trajectory of US-Iran tensions in the Gulf.
This is a developing story. Casualty figures may be updated as more information becomes available.
