New York: UN Secretary‑General António Guterres has condemned the deadly assault on the Islamic Centre of San Diego, where two teenage gunmen opened fire on worshippers, killing three men before turning the guns on themselves a few blocks away.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl confirmed the attack is being investigated as a hate crime, underscoring the rising threat to places of worship. The mosque, located just east of Mission Bay, was turned into a scene of horror as worshippers were cut down in cold blood.
In a statement delivered by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, Guterres described attacks on places of worship as “particularly heinous” and stressed the urgent need to confront hatred and intolerance in all their forms. He extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and expressed solidarity with the Muslim community.
The Secretary‑General called for a thorough and transparent investigation and urged the global community to unite against acts of hatred, ensuring that places of worship remain sanctuaries of peace rather than targets of violence.
