Nsukka (Enugu State): The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Prof. Oguejiofor Ujam, has announced that 167 students received first-class honours degrees at the institution’s 54th convocation ceremony.

Ujam made the announcement on Friday in Nsukka during the conferment of bachelor’s degrees and diplomas.

According to him, out of a total of 9,821 graduates, 167 earned first-class honours, 3,485 obtained second-class honours (Upper Division) and 5,217 earned second-class honours (Lower Division).

“I congratulate all the graduating students for their dedication and commitment, which made it possible for them to graduate today.

“I especially congratulate their parents and guardians for choosing UNN as the university in which to invest in their children’s and wards’ education.

“UNN will continue to do its best to remain among the best universities in the world,” he said.

The acting VC stated that within the past five months, his administration had achieved significant milestones, including the provision of access roads and clean water for students’ hostels and staff quarters.

“Through the support of a university alumnus, we now have a 50,000-litre water tank that supplies water to the institution,” he said.

Ujam disclosed that one of the significant challenges facing the institution was inadequate power supply and lamented that the monthly electricity bill amounted to at least N200 million.

“This financial burden significantly affects our operational capacity and resource allocation.

“UNN is making every effort to address the problem, and we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rural Electrification Agency for the supply of 10 megawatts of electricity,” he said.

In his remark, Mr Kayode Olubunmi Ojo, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the UNN Governing Council, congratulated the graduates, reminding them that their life’s journey had just begun.

He urged them to be focused, prayerful, diligent, hardworking, honest and good ambassadors of the institution.

The UNN Registrar, Dr Ngozi Nnebedum, stated that Mba Angel Ifechukwu and Nwaigbo John Cherechim, both from the Faculty of Engineering, were the joint best-graduating students with a CGPA of 4.94.

One of the graduating students, Igwebuike Kenechi, who earned a first-class degree with a CGPA of 4.59 in the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences, UNN, shared his thoughts.

He commended the institution’s management for creating an environment that enables effective teaching and learning.

He expressed gratitude to his parents, Mr and Mrs Kingsley Igwebuike, for their love, support, and sacrifices throughout his academic journey.

“I thank my parents for their unwavering support and belief in me, which helped me reach this milestone,” he said.
