Like Trump, like Tinubu

President Donald Trump of United States of America and President Bola Tinubu of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, though leading vastly different countries, display striking similarities in their political course, leadership styles, and public image.

An analysis of their parallels includes their leadership styles, controversial legal and ethical histories, transactional political strategies, media engagement and rhetoric, economic reform agendas, polarising figures, and their perception as strongman leaders, among other similarities.

For instance, both leaders have, at different times, displayed populist and disruptive leadership styles. Both Trump and Tinubu have adopted populist approaches, positioning themselves as outsiders challenging established political norms.

Trump’s “America First” agenda has also been replicated in Nigeria by President Tinubu, who has adopted a similar approach, christening it “Nigeria First.”

Tinubu’s economic reforms in Nigeria reflect their shared commitment to restructuring governmental systems and appealing directly to the populace.

Both presidents are bold and highly courageous. They have both had cause to confront and challenge constituted authorities on their beliefs and political aspirations.

For instance, Tinubu dared the sitting president during the run-up to the 2023 presidential election. He declared that it was his turn to become the next president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Emilokan) despite all odds. He said, “Even if you hoard fuel and funds, I will still win the election.”

And true to his words, he won the election!

Similarly, before his reemergence as the US president again, Trump issued a bold challenge to President Joe Biden, proposing a “no-holds-barred” debate with no moderators or rules to test Biden’s competence.

Trump suggested the format would allow both leaders to speak freely about their visions for America, claiming it would “blow everything away” in terms of ratings and public interest.

Each leader has faced significant legal and ethical scrutiny and is noted for their controversial legal and ethical antecedence. For instance, Trump has been involved in various legal challenges, including allegations related to the US Capitol riot, tax evasion and other controversies.

Similarly, Tinubu has faced accusations regarding his academic credentials, identity issues, and financial dealings. Despite these challenges, both have wielded, maintained and commanded substantial political influence.

Again, their leadership styles are marked by transactional political strategies. Trump’s dealings often emphasise direct benefits and negotiations, while Tinubu’s political manoeuvres in Nigeria showcase a pragmatic approach to alliances and governance.

Both leaders are businessmen and belong to the aristocratic class. Tinubu was the first president to have become the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a multi-billionaire, and without a ‘political godfather’. Analysts attribute their courage and daring composure to their backgrounds of being stinking rich.

Both leaders use similar media engagement and rhetoric. They are famous for their distinctive communication styles. Trump’s rhetoric is characterised by directness and confrontation, often utilising social media to bypass traditional channels. Tinubu, although less globally prominent than Trump, has also employed assertive messaging to consolidate his political base.

Also, their economic reform agendas are very similar. Economic transformation is the central focus of both presidents. Trump focused on tax reforms and deregulation to stimulate the US economy.

Tinubu has initiated significant changes in Nigeria, including the removal of subsidies, tax reform, and adjustments to currency policy, among others, aiming to stabilise and grow the nation’s economy.

Trump and Tinubu are polarising figures within their respective countries. Their policies and leadership styles have garnered both fervent support and strong opposition, reflecting deep divisions in public opinion.

Both are often perceived as embodying “strongman” leadership qualities. Trump’s assertive approach has influenced global leaders with similar tendencies, while Tinubu’s decisive actions in Nigeria, such as his involvement in regional security matters, reinforce this image.

In summary, while operating in different geopolitical contexts, Presidents Trump and Tinubu share commonalities in their disruptive approaches to leadership, emphasis on economic reforms, and the polarising effects of their governance styles.
