Lagos: The Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) on Tuesday advised women to remain safety-conscious both at home and in public spaces.

Mrs Bolaji Dada, Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, spoke at a one-day workshop held in Agege.

She said being safety-conscious was crucial in preventing hazards in homes and across public environments.

The workshop, themed ‘Homes and Public Places Safety: An Essential Way of Life,’ was organised by WAPA.

Dada said a safe home depends not only on its occupants, but also on how well it is managed and protected.

She explained that public safety goes beyond police presence and requires collective effort and awareness.

“This theme is timely in our fast-paced, urban society like Lagos.

“Movement, interaction, and daily life activities take place across diverse and dynamic public spaces.

“Safety is not just important, it is essential for everyone, young or old,” she said.

She said safety must be ensured at home, on the road, at school, in parks, and on public transport.

“Safety is a culture built through awareness, civic duty, planning, and respect for public order.

“This meeting matters not only for the ideas shared, but also the partnerships it fosters,” Dada said.

Mrs Oluwatosin Sogbola, Director of Safety Training and Sensitisation at the Lagos State Safety Commission, was the resource person at the event.

She emphasised the importance of creating widespread safety awareness for all women.

“Safety is a continuous learning process that must be practised throughout life,” she said.

She stressed that women and children are especially vulnerable to safety risks across the country.

“Women must always prioritise their safety, and that of public places,” she warned.

She urged mothers to teach children safety habits for homes, schools, and public areas.

The workshop ended with a fire drill to demonstrate safety measures and fire prevention at home.

Participants were taught what to do in case of a fire outbreak to protect their lives.
