Enugu: The new Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, on Wednesday sealed the X-ray section of the Poly General Hospital located in Asata, the heart of the state capital.

Ugwu sealed the unit during an on-the-spot inspection by him and a team of the Ministry of Health officials, having identified the X-ray unit of the hospital as an unsafe practice with regulatory breaches.

The Commissioner explained that the action was necessary to protect patients, staff and the community from potential hazards associated with improper handling and operation of radiology equipment.

He stated that the safety of the citizens was non-negotiable, adding that any health facility operating without meeting required safety and operational standards would face immediate sanctions.

“This action will serve as a warning, as Gov. Peter Mbah will not compromise on the quality of healthcare delivery.

“This inspection revealed several violations, including the absence of proper radiation shielding and failure to maintain essential safety protocols,” he said.

The Commissioner assured the public that the facility would resume its X-ray services only after rectifying all violations and undergoing a follow-up inspection by the Ministry of Health.
