Abakaliki, Nigeria: Medical and nutritional professionals have urged individuals aged 40 and above to moderate their intake of cold beverages, warning that chilled drinks may exacerbate certain health conditions, particularly during cold weather.
Experts highlighted potential risks associated with consuming icy drinks, especially for those with underlying medical issues. The advisory comes amid persistent rainfall and cooler temperatures in Abakaliki, where many older adults reportedly continue to favour chilled beverages.
Nutritionist Dr. Maryrose Onuora explained that while water temperature does not significantly impact hydration, icy beverages can lead to mild digestive discomfort, bloating, and delayed gastric emptying. She also cautioned individuals prone to migraines, noting that icy drinks may stimulate cranial nerves and trigger headaches.
“Adults over 40 should be cautious with very chilled beverages, particularly in cold weather and if they have a history of cardiovascular issues,” Onuora advised.
Cardiologist Dr. John Ogazi added that sudden consumption of icy drinks can provoke temporary shifts in heart rate and blood pressure due to nervous system reflexes. While typically harmless for healthy individuals, he warned that those with heart conditions should avoid cold drinks during or after physical exertion.
Dr. Festus Onwe, another medical expert, pointed out that cold beverages may worsen tooth sensitivity and respiratory symptoms, including nasal congestion and mucus thickening during infections. He recommended that individuals with dental or cardiovascular concerns opt for warmer alternatives.
The experts emphasised that healthy adults may continue to enjoy cold drinks in moderation. However, they advised older adults and those with chronic conditions to monitor their body’s response and consider switching to room-temperature or warm fluids.
“Hydration remains essential,” they concluded. “Choose the temperature that feels most comfortable and does not provoke symptoms.”
