Abuja: In a significant move aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), President Bola Tinubu has reconstituted the governing council and board.

This strategic overhaul seeks to strengthen governance, improve oversight, and drive impactful initiatives to address environmental challenges, particularly in regions affected by oil pollution.

The new leadership is expected to bring fresh perspectives and renewed commitment to the project’s goals.

Consequently, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, will now chair the newly reconstituted Governing Council.

Presidential spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, announced the changes in a statement on Monday in Abuja.

The new council members include Loanyie Barituka Victor, representing environmental non-government organisations, and Bright Onyebuchi Jacob and Henry Obiabure for the Niger Delta communities.

Prof. Barinedum Nwibere and Baride Gwezia will represent the Ogoni community on the Council.

Gideon Onyebuwa and Dr Ibikunle Omotehinse represent the nine oil-producing states.

Four alternate members were named as Dr Abraham Olungwe and Maeba Ekpobari for Ogoniland, and Joseph Akedesuo and Beauty Warejuowei for the Niger Delta.

The President also reconstituted the HYPREP Board of Trustees, reappointing Emmanuel Deeyah as chairman.

Fred Igwe and Dr Fred Kpakol will represent Ogoni communities and stakeholders on the board.

Mrs Dorcas Amos represents the other Niger Delta communities, while Chief Jide Damazio, reappointed, represents the non-governmental organisations dealing with environmental issues.
