Abakaliki (Nigeria): A former Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, has been appointed chairman of the newly established Ebonyi Economic Committee.

The 15-member committee, comprising economists, industrialists and technocrats, was inaugurated by Governor Francis Nwifuru on Monday in Abakaliki.

Nwifuru tasked the committee with driving industrialisation in the state, particularly by addressing its erratic power supply.

“You should harness the state’s solid minerals and apply your expertise in carrying out this assignment.

“People will commend us for engaging industrialists and technocrats to guide the state’s development,” he said.

The governor emphasised that the numerous challenges facing the state necessitated the engagement of experienced individuals to lead its industrial growth.

“We need your guidance on reviving the Nigerian Cement Company (NIGERCEM) and establishing another cement factory,” he said.

He also highlighted the state’s potential for salt production. “We are called the salt of the nation, yet we lack a functional salt production plant. This must change,” he added.

Nwifuru expressed confidence in Nnaji’s expertise, noting that his background in power would be crucial in tackling Ebonyi’s energy deficit.

“We are the only state without the required energy for industrialisation. Your recommendations will help us resolve this issue.

“The state already has an industrial zone, and we trust your ability to attract industries,” he said.

Committee chairman Prof Nnaji thanked the governor for the appointment and pledged to deliver on the confidence reposed in the team.

“You are a visionary leader, showing courage and boldness to advance the state’s development,” Nnaji said.

The other members include former Labour Party governorship candidate Dr Edward Nkwegu and renowned industrialist Chibuike Orogwu, among others.
