Bauchi, Nigeria: An endocrinologist, Dr Ayuba Mugana, has advised persons living with diabetes to increase their intake of Doum fruit to stabilise their conditions.
He said this in an interview with reporters on Monday in Bauchi.
Mugana, a specialist endocrinologist with Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ABTU–TH), Bauchi, said the fruit contained antioxidants, vitamins, and potassium fibre that could relieve a lot of discomfort in patients.
He said people with diabetes could consume doum as either a raw fruit, mixed with tea or in other recipes.
“Doum is a good fruit for diabetic patients because of its rich nutritional value. It contains antioxidants that help in controlling sugar levels and lowering high blood pressure.
“Because of its rich fibre, it aids digestion, prevents constipation and helps relieve bloating,” he said.
