Lafia, Nigeria: In response to rising complaints of environmental degradation, the Nasarawa State Government has begun inspecting mining sites across the state.

Princess Margaret Elayo, Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, announced this at a press conference on Friday in Lafia.

She explained that the decision followed reports and complaints of environmental degradation caused by mining activities in different communities of the state.

The commissioner emphasised the importance of strengthening environmental protection in the state and promoting environmentally friendly practices in mining sites.

“Our state is blessed with rich mineral deposits that have contributed significantly to our economy.

“We have also observed increasing environmental challenges linked to unregulated and unsafe mining operations,” she said.

According to her, the government recognised the growing environmental challenges arising from unregulated mining activities, including erosion, deforestation, water pollution, and the loss of farmlands.

“In response, the state government, through our ministry, is taking decisive steps to promote responsible and sustainable mining practices,” she said.

Elayo said the government would strengthen collaboration with security agencies, miners, traditional institutions, and host communities to ensure that mining activities were conducted in line with approved environmental standards.

She said the initiative was not designed to intimidate or punish anyone, but to guide operators and ensure compliance with best environmental practices.

“We therefore call on all miners and community leaders to cooperate with government teams, adopt eco-friendly methods, and contribute to the restoration of degraded lands and the protection of water sources,” she advised.

The commissioner noted that the true wealth of the state was not only in the minerals beneath the ground but in the well-being of the people and the preservation of the environment.

“Together, we can build a state where economic development and environmental protection advance hand-in-hand.
