Enugu: The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has formally condoled with the Niger Government and families of the unfortunate victims of the Mokwa flood disaster.
The apex socio-cultural organisation’s national publicity secretary, Dr Ezechi Chukwu, disclosed this in a statement issued in Enugu on Friday on behalf of the body’s President-General, Sen. Azuka Mbata.
According to Chukwu, the news of the flood in Mokwa was received with sadness.
He said that the organisation saw the unfortunate incident, which occurred on May 28, killing over 200 people, with many maimed, as “heartbreaking”.
Conveying the organisation’s condolences to the bereaved families, government and people of Niger, Chukwu quoted Mbata as urging the government to adopt measures that could help to avoid or mitigate such disasters in the future.
“Mbata calls on Niger Government and all other governments to implement the recommendations from experts on environment and weather.
“The Igbo leader, therefore, prays God Almighty to grant the bereaved families the fortitude to bear this painful loss,” the statement added. It further urged them “to take solace in the will of God.”
