Kano Drugs Agency Clears ₦980m Legacy Debt

by TheDiggerNews

Kano, Nigeria: The Kano State Drugs and Medical Consumables Supply Agency (DMCSA) has made a significant stride toward financial recovery, offsetting ₦980 million of the ₦1.17 billion debt inherited from the previous administration.

Its Director-General, Gali Sule, said this during the eighth quarterly review meeting of the agency on Tuesday in Kano.

He said the agency achieved the feat through proactive financial reforms aimed at promoting transparency and accountability in its operations.

Sule recalled that when he assumed duty in July 2023, the agency was in a precarious state, operating on a deficit due to unpaid obligations to the suppliers.

“Today, I am proud to announce that N980 million out of the N1.17 billion inherited debt has been cleared, and the agency is now on a stable financial footing,” he said.

Sule reiterated commitment to clear the outstanding debt and strengthen collaboration with stakeholders in the health sector.

This, he said, is not just a financial recovery, but a transformation towards building an accountable, efficient, and people-centred agency.

Sule said the agency has increased drug availability across public health facilities from 30 to 97 per cent, at a 40 per cent subsidy compared to the open market.

He said the agency’s fund value rose from N102 million in July 2023 to N377 million in September 2025, adding that the agency received various forms of support from partners during the period under review.

“The support we have received in this quarter includes that of the Gates Foundation through its implementing partner, the Capacity for Sustainable Development (C4SD), for implementation of the Integrated Last-Mile Delivery (ILMD).

“We also received Drug Revolving Fund (DRF) tools from the Canadian Government’s Nutrition International,” he said.

Sule listed other interventions, including tender evaluation process support by the UK Government’s FCDO-funded project, tagged “Lafiya Programme,” and a donation of an electric stacker from Jawa International Ltd.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran, lauded the management of the agency for the outstanding achievements.

Labaran also commended partners for their health sector interventions and pledged to ensure the effective utilisation of tools and equipment donated to the agency.
