Lagos: A non‑governmental foundation, the Responsible Gaming Against Addiction Foundation, has launched a documentary titled “Behind the Bet” to address the growing menace of gambling addiction in Nigeria.
The film was screened on Thursday at the Alliance Française Centre in Lagos, attracting stakeholders from the medical, entertainment, and gaming regulation sectors.
The event, moderated by actor and filmmaker Mr Ayodeji Adejumo, focused on the need to raise awareness about the psychological and social dangers of gambling.
Speaking at the screening, the Foundation’s Programme Director and one of the producers, Mr Seun Abimbola, said the documentary was inspired by the rising number of Nigerians silently battling gambling addiction.
According to him, gambling addiction remains a hidden problem because it lacks visible symptoms, unlike alcohol or drug dependence.
Abimbola said the Foundation operates a toll-free helpline — 080000GETHELP (0800004384357) — to provide immediate support for victims of gambling addiction.
He added that an online test is available on the Foundation’s website, www.responsiblegaming.africa, to help individuals assess their risk levels.
He explained that the Foundation also offers intervention, counselling, and advocacy against the stigma often faced by affected persons.
“The documentary seeks to create a public outcry and help people understand that gambling addiction is real and treatable,” he said.
Special guests at the screening included Dr Harrit Esambedo of the Nigerian Medical Association, Mr Jamie Amau of the Lagos Internal Revenue Service, representatives of the NDLEA, and the Association of Nigerian Bookmakers.
The documentary featured real-life stories of addiction and expert perspectives on what constitutes irresponsible gaming.
It was written by Asemota Ife-Iyamu and Jimim Ojikutu, and produced by Angela Bekeredemo and Seun Abimbola. The screening ended with an interactive session and audience feedback.
