Abuja: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday declared a nationwide security emergency, directing the Nigerian Police and Armed Forces to recruit thousands of additional personnel to confront rising insecurity across the country.
In a statement from the State House, the President ordered the police to recruit 20,000 new officers, raising the total planned intake to 50,000. He also authorised the use of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camps as temporary training facilities.
“Today, in view of the emerging security situation, I have decided to declare a nationwide security emergency and order additional recruitment into the Armed Forces,” Tinubu said.
He further directed that officers withdrawn from VIP guard duties undergo crash training before redeployment to security-challenged areas.
The Department of State Services (DSS) was also tasked with deploying trained forest guards to flush out terrorists and bandits operating in Nigeria’s forests.
The President commended recent rescue operations in Kebbi and Kwara States and honoured fallen soldiers, including Brigadier-General Musa Uba.
‎Tinubu warned that his administration should not be taken for granted. “Those who want to test our resolve should never mistake our restraint for weakness,” he said.
He urged the National Assembly to review laws enabling the creation of state police and called on local authorities and religious institutions to strengthen security measures.
Tinubu underscored his administration’s resolve to end the persistent herder-farmer clashes, announcing that the newly created Livestock Ministry will spearhead reforms.
“Our administration created the Livestock Ministry to address the persistent clashes between herders and farmers. I call on all herder associations to take advantage of it, end open grazing, and surrender illegal weapons. Ranching is now the path forward for sustainable livestock farming and national harmony,” he declared.
He warned states against establishing boarding schools in remote areas without adequate security and urged mosques and churches to seek police protection in vulnerable regions.
Tinubu reassured Nigerians of the government’s commitment to safeguarding citizens, restoring peace, and fostering unity.
“Report suspicious activities. Cooperate with security agencies. We are in this fight together, and together we shall win. May God continue to bless Nigeria and keep our armed forces safe,” the statement concluded.
