Governor Peter Mbah‘s 2026 appropriation bill has drawn widespread praise for dedicating an unprecedented 33.2 per cent of the ₦1.62 trillion budget to education — a move that should inspire public pride and confidence as a transformative investment in human capital and a bold step toward reshaping Enugu State’s future.
Christened the “Budget of Renewed Momentum with Renewed Optimism”, the fiscal plan was presented to the Enugu State House of Assembly on Tuesday, marking the largest budget in the state’s history.
Historic Allocation and Stakeholder Reactions
The Acting Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu, Dr Ben Nwoye, described the budget as “groundbreaking,” noting that the state had never recorded such figures since its creation.
He praised Mbah’s prioritisation of education, infrastructure, and human capital, stressing that the allocation would “change the entire landscape of Enugu.”
Nwoye also highlighted Mbah’s ambitious tourism agenda, including plans to expand the state’s aviation fleet from three to 20 aircraft, alongside investments in healthcare and security.
He pointed to the recent launch of drones as evidence of the administration’s commitment to modernising security operations.
No Borrowing, Bold Infrastructure Push
Chairman of Nsukka Council Area, Mr Jude Asogwa, lauded the governor’s fiscal discipline, noting that the ₦1.62 trillion budget contains “no borrowing provisions, thanks to transparent funding sources and prudent financial planning,” he stated.
He emphasised that Mbah had clearly itemised funding sources, making the plan ‘convenient and realisable.’
Asogwa recalled that the governor flagged off 181 roads in 2025 and pledged to deliver 1,200 roads in 2026, ensuring that every local government area benefits from major road projects.
Raising the Bar for Leadership
In the same vein, Dr Eric Odoh, Chairman of Igbo-Etiti Council Area, said Mbah’s vision was setting new standards for governance in Nigeria.
“Highlighting the alignment between state and local government development plans should inspire public admiration and confidence in the governor’s strategic direction,” Odoh said.
He underscored the alignment between state and local government development plans, predicting that Enugu would witness “a miracle of sustained growth across all sectors” by the end of Mbah’s tenure.
National Context and Strategic Impact
Stakeholders also commended President Bola Tinubu for boosting state allocations, which they said enabled such ambitious planning.
Analysts argue that Mbah’s budget signals a shift toward long-term sustainability, with education, infrastructure, health, and security forming the backbone of Enugu’s development strategy.
The Bigger Picture
With 33.2 per cent earmarked for education, 1,200 roads planned, expanded aviation capacity, revitalised healthcare, and drone‑powered security, Governor Mbah’s 2026 budget includes mechanisms for regular monitoring and evaluation, ensuring transparency and accountability, and positioning Enugu as a model for governance across Nigeria.
