OAU’s 49th Convocation: 6,562 Graduates, 218 Achieve First Class Honours

Ile-Ife: As Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife marks its 49th Convocation Ceremony, Prof. Adebayo Bamire, Vice-Chancellor of the citadel of learning, has announced that the institution convocates 6,562 graduates, of whom 218 earned first class.

Bamire made the disclosure during the 49th Convocation ceremony for the 2023/2024 academic session on Thursday in Ile-Ife.

The vice-chancellor explained that the graduates include 5,549 undergraduates, 959 Postgraduates, and 54 undergraduate diplomas.

According to him, 218 of the graduands achieved First Class Honours, 2,132 earned Second Class Honours (Upper Division), 2,244 earned Second Class Honours (Lower Division), 625 earned Third Class Honours, and 34 earned Pass.

Bamire explained that convocation ceremonies have been a great platform for showcasing the institution’s achievements in teaching, research, and service delivery.

The vice-chancellor stated that the graduands have been equipped to make contributions to national development.

He applauded President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s efforts to develop the education sector, particularly the review of the curriculum of studies, even at the tertiary education level.

Bamire expressed gratitude to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, for fostering an enabling environment that actively encourages institutional development.

“Specifically, we thank you for facilitating two major infrastructural and logistical improvements within the period.

“The beautification of Road 1, the provision of 50 CNG buses and 20 CNG tricycles by the First Lady of Nigeria, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, which will significantly ease transportation challenges within the University,” he added.

He commended the University Council and the management team for their unwavering commitment to sustaining the peaceful academic environment on campus.

The vice-chancellor congratulated the graduands for their unwavering dedication to academic excellence, saying their hard work, resilience and commitment have earned them success.

Bamire charged the graduands to apply the knowledge, skills, and values acquired in university to the advancement of Nigeria and the global community.

The  congregation observed a minute’s silence for the late Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Prof. Siyan Oyeweso, who passed away on Dec. 2, 2025.
