Agege, Lagos State: Chairman Abdul‑Ganiyu Obasa on Friday distributed ₦10 million in empowerment grants to 50 youths, aimed at boosting local entrepreneurship and self‑reliance in the council area.

Each beneficiary received ₦200,000 after a screening process to verify business activities.

Obasa said the initiative was a fulfilment of the pledge made during the first Agege Youth Summit held in 2025.

“This empowerment programme is a deliberate investment in the future of our community. Youth empowerment is not a slogan,” he said.

Obasa explained that the beneficiaries were selected from youths already engaged in productive ventures, with the expectation that the support would lead to business expansion and job creation.

He added that the council would conduct periodic follow‑ups to monitor utilisation of the funds and assess progress.

“Empowerment must be sustainable. We will continue to engage and monitor beneficiaries to ensure long‑term benefits,” he said.

According to him, the scheme is part of the council’s broader youth development agenda focusing on entrepreneurship, skills development and inclusive economic growth.

One of the beneficiaries, Miss Aisha Lawal, a fashion designer, said: “This grant will help me buy more sewing machines and employ apprentices. It’s a big relief for my business.”

Another beneficiary, Mr Samuel Adekunle, who runs a phone repair shop, said: “I can now expand my shop and stock more accessories.

” The support will increase my income and help me train other young people,” he said.
