AFCON 2025: King Mohammed VI Hails Morocco’s Role in Hosting ‘Month of African Joy’

King Mohammed VI of Morocco lauded the 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025), calling the tournament a pivotal moment for Morocco and a triumph for the entire continent.

The king’s remark came in a statement by the Royal Cabinet. It was released on Thursday after the tournament, which ran from Dec. 21, 2025, to Jan. 18, 2026.

He said Morocco was proud to have hosted a month of joy and sporting emotion. They contributed to Africa’s prominence and its football.

The monarch deemed AFCON 2025 more than a sporting achievement, emphasizing that the event highlighted Morocco’s broader developmental progress.

“This edition of the continental competition will stand as a milestone.

“Beyond its excellent sporting results, it made for a gauge for the kingdom’s major leap on the path to development and progress, fruit of a long-term vision and a unique and efficient Moroccan model which puts the citizen at the heart of all ambition,” he said.

He thanked all Moroccans for contributing to the tournament’s success and commended institutions, volunteers, and citizens for their efforts.

The king also praised Moroccan fans for their exemplary support of the national team, now ranked eighth in the world. He attributed the Moroccan team’s performance to sustained investment in sports development and infrastructure.

The king praised talented players from the Moroccan diaspora who chose to represent the country with pride. Addressing incidents that marred the final moments of the Morocco-Senegal match, he acknowledged the regrettable nature of the events but urged calm and unity.

“EvHe said, “Even if this celebration was marred by the events at the end of the match, once passions fade, inter-African fraternity will prevail,”he monarch stressed that “this Moroccan success was also an African success.”

The king dismissed what he termed attempts to undermine Morocco’s accomplishments, affirming that they would not weaken deep continental bonds. Nothing will alter the closeness that was fostered over centuries between our African peoples, nor the fruitful cooperation built hand in hand with different countries of the continent,” he said.

Reaffirming Morocco’s identity, the king said the country would remain faithful to brotherhood, solidarity, and mutual respect in Africa. He added that Morocco would continue to work for “a united and prosperous Africa” through deeper partnerships and the exchange of expertise and knowledge.
