Odegbami Calls for Greater Involvement of Ex-Internationals in Football Governance

Mbaise (Imo, Nigeria): Segun Odegbami, former captain of Nigeria’s Green Eagles, has urged greater inclusion of retired footballers in the administration of Nigerian football.

At the ceremony, where Imo-born businessman and philanthropist Chief Success Akagburuonye was conferred a chieftaincy title during his 60th birthday celebrations in Aboh Mbaise on Friday, Odegbami emphasised his point.

The 73-year-old 1980 Africa Cup hero said the NFF should prioritise retired players’ on-field experience.

Odegbami, known as “Mathematical” for his precise style, continued by explaining that experienced footballers could offer “practical insights” needed to revive Nigeria’s struggling national teams.

He added that players from Nigeria’s first proper footballing decade could transform the sport’s fortunes if given administrative responsibilities.

“Nigeria’s first football decade faced many challenges and limited facilities.

He emphasised, “Today, the story is different, with academies and improved facilities. Our football now begs for first-hand experience, hence the need to bring in former players.”

Akagburuonye thanked God for the chieftaincy title, ‘Akara Ugo Ndigbo,’ bestowed by Igbo traditional rulers.

“The greatest honour goes to God, who honoured me with great privileges, and God will honour all who honoured me.

Good things will follow you, and God will fulfil your heart’s desires.

“I dedicate this honour to God and pray for His blessings on you morning, afternoon, and night,” he said.

Activities include a novelty match featuring at least 15 former Nigerian internationals on Saturday and a church thanksgiving service on Sunday.
