Treat Journalists as Professionals, Not Beggars — IGP Disu

Abuja: Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has called for stronger police-media collaboration, declaring that journalists deserve respect and must never be treated as beggars, as he addressed the NUJ FCT Council Congress in Abuja on Saturday.

Disu addressed the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council Congress in Abuja on Saturday, emphasising his professional and respectful relationship with the media.

He urged that journalists be regarded as esteemed professionals, noting that the media shapes public opinion and ensures accountability.

Disu highlighted his respectful relationship with journalists and the need to treat them as professionals, not beggars.

The police chief called for stronger collaboration between the police and the media, saying a healthy partnership would improve public trust and communication on securityHe encouraged both police officers and journalists to act with integrity, noting that responsible behaviour influences societal perceptions.ty.

NUJ-FCT Council Chairman Grace Ike congratulated Disu on his appointment and called him a long-time press ally.

We are confident in your leadership and ready to work with the police to report security matters objectively, Ike said.

She reaffirmed the council’s commitment to responsible journalism and support for initiatives aimed at strengthening security and governance in the territory.

Ike added that the council would invite the I-G as a special guest at its forthcoming 2026 Press Week celebration.
