Abuja: The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has clarified that the detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El‑Rufai, is lawful and based on a valid court order. The commission stressed that due process was followed in securing the order.

The commission explained in a statement by its Spokesperson, Okor Odey, on Tuesday in Abuja, that his continued detention was based on an existing court order and not a new directive.

Odey said the commission appeared in court on Tuesday for the hearing of an application filed by El-Rufai on March 6, seeking to overturn a remand order issued earlier on March 5.

According to him, the court proceedings did not result in any fresh detention order.

He said the court adjourned the matter to March 31, after El-Rufai’s legal team, during the March 12 hearing, requested time to respond to the commission’s submission.

Odey emphasised that the initial remand order had granted the ICPC 14 days to detain and investigate the former governor for allegations of money laundering and abuse of office.

“After that 14-day period expired, the Commission applied for an extension, which the court approved on March 5,” Odey said.

He explained that an earlier attempt by El-Rufai’s legal team to set aside the remand order issued on Feb.19 was dismissed on March 9.

While reaffirming the commission’s position, Odey stated that El-Rufai remains in lawful custody under a valid court order.

He added that all actions remain fully compliant with the law, including the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015.

The commission reiterated its commitment to due process and warned against misinformation, stating legal matters should be resolved in court, not in public speculation.

The ICPC handles its duties professionally and with respect for the rule of law.

We urge the public to avoid spreading unverified information and to rely on official commission updates.
