A group from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) visited leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja to show support, pointing to increasing political pressure on Nigeria’s opposition parties.
According to a statement released Wednesday by PDP factional National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong, the meeting was called because of “recent political attacks targeted at Nigeria’s opposition parties.”
The PDP group, led by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and joined by Adolphus Wabara, Jerry Gana, and Babangida Aliyu, warned that democratic traditions are under threat. They emphasized the need to stay alert to actions that could weaken political diversity.
ADC leaders, among them former Senate President David Mark, Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi, welcomed the PDP group.
They thanked them for the visit and shared similar worries about the decline of opposition parties, calling it a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
Both parties agreed that ongoing cooperation is important to protect democratic institutions and political freedoms.
