ECOWAS Accelerates AfCFTA: Breaking Barriers for West African Growth

ECOWAS is intensifying efforts to transform the AfCFTA from a policy framework into tangible economic progress for West Africa.

At the 3rd Biashara Afrika Forum in Lomé, Togo (May 18–20, 2026), the organization reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating trade barriers, enabling businesses to fully leverage open regional markets.

The forum brought together policymakers, trade groups, business support organisations, and small businesses to accelerate AfCFTA implementation and strengthen trade within Africa.

They discussed topics like trade finance, digital payment systems, setting common standards, removing non-tariff barriers, and building regional value chains.

Participants stressed the need to work together so AfCFTA brings real benefits to businesses.

ECOWAS focused on building stronger trade networks and improving market access to support lasting economic growth.

By tackling trade challenges and working together on strategies, ECOWAS is making sure West Africa not only takes part in AfCFTA but also helps guide its success.
