Nigeria Pushes Electric Mobility Agenda, Inaugurates EV Industry Council

Nigeria has moved closer to leading Africa’s electric mobility movement by launching the executive council of the Electric Vehicle Assemblers and Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (EVAMAN).

During the first congress in Abuja, the Federal Government restated its commitment to growing the electric vehicle (EV) industry with policies focused on local content, innovation, technology transfer, and long-term industrial development.

At the event, Mr Ibiam Oguejiofor, speaking for the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, stressed the value of Nigerian skills, businesses, and local materials in driving industrial change. He highlighted Presidential Executive Order No. 5 as important for supporting local science and technology.

The new EVAMAN executive council, led by Prince Mustapha Mona Audu, promised to build more partnerships and pointed to progress in registration, membership, and bringing the industry together.

It also emphasised that electric mobility can drive industrial growth, sustainability, and job creation.

Industry experts,However, industry experts pointed out ongoing challenges. One major issue is limited access to finance, as high lending rates make it hard for manufacturers and assemblers to get affordable funding.

Ranging infrastructure is still a significant barrier, as there are currently few operational charging stations nationwide.

The industry also faces unclear rules for vehicles and parts, which slows growth. Poor and inconsistent data makes it harder for people to make informed decisions.

Consultant Gift Agboro called for measures such as lower lending rates, stronger coordination among parties, and improved collaboration to accelerate sector growth.

OANDO Clean Energy has continued to invest in electric buses and solar power to support Nigeria’s EV sector.

By launching EVAMAN’s executive council, Nigeria is taking a strong step to lead Africa’s electric mobility sector.

This move shows Nigeria is turning its electric mobility goals into real action and is committed to making electric vehicles part of its industrial and environmental plans.
