Awka: The Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, Anambra State, has dismissed five academic and non-academic staff over allegations of sexual abuse, harassment, intimidation, extortion and other forms of professional misconduct.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Harrison Madubueze, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Awka.
He said the decision was taken at the 122nd meeting of the Governing Council held on June 12.
Those affected include Prof. C.C. Nwabachili, immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Law; Prof. Chike Osegbue of the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences; Dr I.H. Iheukwumere; and Mr Emeka Nwabunnia, both of the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Uli Campus.
Also dismissed is Mrs Ifeoma Kakulu, a Principal Assistant Registrar and former Examination Officer in the Faculty of Law.
Madubueze said the affected staff were found culpable of offences ranging from sexual misconduct to intimidation and extortion.
He said the Governing Council reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, integrity and accountability within the institution.
According to him, the council warned that actions capable of tarnishing the university’s reputation would not be tolerated.
It also pledged to maintain a safe, accountable and forward-looking academic environment in line with its institutional vision.
The university said the disciplinary action underscores its resolve to uphold ethical standards and sustain public confidence in its academic and administrative processes.
